Freemasonry teaches us that we are builders—not of stone and mortar, but of character and wisdom. Every Mason is engaged in the Great Work, the lifelong journey of refining the rough ashlar of our being into a perfected stone, fit for the Temple of the Divine.
But here’s the real question: Are you truly working on your inner temple, or are you simply wearing the apron without doing the work?
The Rough Ashlar—Recognizing the Work to Be Done
The rough ashlar represents the unrefined state of a man—full of potential but in need of shaping. Think deeply:
What are your rough edges?
Have you truly examined your own flaws, or do you focus on the imperfections of others?
Do you actively seek enlightenment, or are you content with symbolic participation?
Challenge: Take five minutes today to reflect on one imperfection you need to smooth out in your life. What is it, and how will you begin? Share your thoughts in the comments.
The Working Tools—Are You Using Them or Just Holding Them?
Freemasonry provides us with tools: the square for honesty, the compass for self-discipline, the trowel for spreading brotherly love. But tools alone do not build a temple—action does.
Do you measure your actions by the square of morality?
Are you truly setting boundaries with your compass, or do your desires control you?
How often do you use the trowel to mend broken relationships, spread kindness, and unite instead of divide?
Challenge: Choose one Masonic tool and apply it deliberately in your life today. Tell us which tool you chose and how you used it.
The Temple—What Are You Really Building?
The final question is this: What is your temple? Is it just a title, a rank, a position—or is it something greater? Are you building a legacy of wisdom, virtue, and integrity?
Many claim to be Masons, but few truly build. Are you one of the few?

I feel an area of imperfection is one of the human senses, not the usual 5 but mainly balance. To be able to recognize when you are in need of shifting your schedule to compliment or to enhance your way of life. Many times we as men feel that we are doing what is best for whole but are we only doing what is best for the moment.
